The Top 3 Things to know about Energy Healing

1.  You don't have to be spiritual.

2.  There's thousands of years of research.

3.  Everyone can do it.

There is absolutely no need to be spiritual, or to believe in anything specific, to benefit from energy healing.  The very nature of health is a self-correcting mechanism to restore balance, known as homeostasis.  Energy healing taps into this mechanism and enhances your body's ability to heal itself.

References to energy healing are found throughout recorded history.  Many cultures have complex, well defined healing systems.  Here are just 2 examples - there are many, many more.

Traditional Chinese Medicine has been successfully used for over 2,000 years.  It's based on the idea of balance (yin/yang) and that our life force energy (chi) is circulated throughout the body by meridians - pathways than run from head to toe.

Ancient Indian texts refer to chakras - energy centres along the spine that are linked to glands and organs.  These chakras balance and distribute life force energy (prana).

Each and every one of us can do energy healing.

I believe it's the fundamental nature of being human.

Just like everything else humans can do, some do it better than others.  But with the right training, intention and practice everyone can help others heal.   Even if you're not inclined to learn the skills yourself, a good practitioner will show you simple techniques you can do at home to maintain your own energy balance.

DIY Emotional Freedom - It's Free!

Want to erase your negative thoughts and emotions? Want to rid yourself of pain or discomfort? Want to do it all from the comfort of your home?  All for free?

YOU CAN!

It's called Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT).   It's simple, fast and easy and you can literally erase decades worth of negative emotion and pain.

Gary Craig has gifted EFT to the world - FREE - no strings attached.

While Gary has recently evolved EFT into what he calls "Optimal EFT", the original "Gold Standard" EFT continues to help people all over the world.  You can learn everything you need to know to start tapping your way to emotional freedom here on his website.  For free.

EFT involves tapping on specific points on your body.  These points fall on meridians - the same lines of energy used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (e.g. acupuncture) and Touch for Health.   Tapping these points releases the energy disruptions caused by negative thoughts and memories.  Releasing the energy disruptions releases the thoughts and memories.  It's that simple.  It's that easy.  It's free.

It may seem odd that I'm promoting a website teaching people how to heal themselves for free.  After all, I offer healing sessions that are not free.

My goal is to help as many people as possible to feel their best.

I understand some people can't afford to pay for healing sessions.
I understand some people don't want to pay for healing sessions.

This shouldn't stop them from healing.
Everyone deserves the chance to heal.

So why not try EFT?

Did I mention, it's FREE!

Earth Dragon Healing - now offering Touch for Health energy balances

I am happy to announce that in addition to Reiki and Sound healing, I am now offering Touch for Health energy balances.

What is Touch For Health?  As Matthew Thie, President, explains “Touch for Health is a system of balancing posture, attitude and life energy to relieve stress, aches and pains, feel and function better, be more effective, clarify and achieve your goals and enjoy your life!”  Click here to read more about Touch for Health

Using the principles of Chinese medicine, Touch for Health is based on muscle testing, massage, energy work and postural alignment.  It includes techniques to reduce stress and pain, and to release negative emotions that may be holding you back from achieving your goals.

Stress & Pain

Every thought and emotion affects our body.  We all know the physical symptoms that intense emotions can create - muscle tension, increased heart rate, increased blood pressure, etc.   It’s important to realize that even less intense, fleeting thoughts and emotions can be held in the body.    Everyday little life-things you may have forgotten, that your body remembers and accumulates.   If not released and rebalanced, these can continue to accumulate until your body responds with discomfort, and eventually pain and/or illness.

The body works on a priority basis.  On it’s own priorities.  Think of it like layers of an onion.  This could mean, for example, that your goal is to relieve your low back pain, yet after a couple of balances your back still hurts.  But your sinuses are clearer, your mood is improved and you’re sleeping better.  Those were your body’s priorities.  Be patient - as you remove the layers your priority will be revealed and released.

Achieving your Goals

Touch for Health has a comprehensive protocol for identifying and achieving wellness oriented goals.  Working with the related meridian metaphors can get your own intuitive perceptions flowing, allowing you to creatively problem solve, move forward and reach your goals.  The body’s priority basis also applies to the goal setting process.  The related muscle testing is important to help keep you focused on your body’s priorities and improve your results.

Is Reiki a psychic abilitiy?

Is my Reiki practitioner psychic?

This is a good question and should be discussed at (or before) the first treatment.  Understandably, people can be confused about the differences between a Reiki treatment and a psychic reading.  The fact that some people who do Reiki are psychic makes the confusion all the more...well...confusing.

The short answer is "No".  Reiki is not a psychic ability.  There are so many websites dedicated to describing psychic abilities I won't spend much time explaining it here.  Basically there are 4 major types of psychic ability:  clairvoyance (clear seeing), clairsentience (clear feeling), clairaudience (clear hearing) and claircognizance (clear knowing).  While there are others, these are the main ways psychics receive their information.

By contrast, Reiki doesn't involve any of these "clairs".  Being attuned to Reiki connects the practitioner to healing energy which they then channel to the client during a treatment.  It's this healing energy that does all the good work.

If you have a Reiki treatment from a person who is psychic, they will pick up information during your treatment.   You should decide ahead of time whether you want them to share this information with you.

While Reiki is not a psychic ability, working with Reiki in a client's energy field with an open and honest intention to heal can sometimes (but not always) lead to spontaneous seeing/feeling/hearing/knowing things that are related to that particular healing session.   This doesn't mean the practitioner is suddenly psychic, it's just the interesting way that energy works.

Reiki is a fantastic way to relax, relieve stress and feel better.  Why not give it a try?

Reiki can help!

Most wellness models in our western culture teach that the body is the foundation for everything in life, that without a healthy body everything else suffers.  I believe this is backwards thinking.  Your body isn't the foundation of your health.  Your body is the physical manifestation of your life experiences.  When your life is out of balance your mind gets stressed.  And when your mind is stressed your body suffers.  The good news is that you can make changes in your life, at any time, that can positively affect your health.

Unfortunately our medical system doesn't teach doctors, or allow them the time needed, to counsel their patients on the things that ultimately manifest in the physical body. So we need to take this responsibility on for ourselves.  How do we do that?

Ask yourself what you think might be the root to your medical condition.  Think beyond the conventional answers like "I need to lose weight" or "I am depressed".  These may be true, but they're the symptoms.  You're looking for the underlying cause.  Dig deeper:  Is your marriage on the rocks?  Do you hate your job?  Are you lonely?

Ask yourself "What does my body need so it can heal?"  Yes, maybe you need antibiotics or some professional counselling.  But maybe you need to finish that novel, hire a nanny, forgive an old injustice, or end a relationship.

This is tough stuff.

Go easy on yourself.

Reiki can help.

Pathways to Health

Physical, Emotional, Mental and Spiritual Healing

According to The World Health Organization, "Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being, not merely the absence of disease."  In keeping with this idea of health, working to create a sense of well-being on the physical, emotional, mental and spiritual levels is what Reiki is all about.

Many people use the terms "healing" and "curing" interchangeably but it's important to understand they do not mean the same thing.  Curing means to completely eradicate an illness or disease in the physical body while healing can occur on many different levels and isn't  even necessarily linked to a physical condition.

What does it mean to heal on these different levels?
  1. Physical - healing on this level might mean eliminating an illness completely, or could simply mean alleviating the symptoms for a while , allowing time to address any underlying root causes that might be found on the emotional, mental or spiritual levels.
  2. Emotional - emotional healing might result in calming fears or coming to acceptance of the effects of life-events such as illness, bereavement, job loss, etc.
  3. Mental - the deep state of relaxation assists with the mental release of negative thought patterns or attitudes that might be interfering with relationships or achieving life goals.
  4. Spiritual - healing from a spiritual level could result in a more compassionate attitude towards self, others and the natural world.  Or it might assist in releasing restrictive belief systems to support greater self-expression and creativity.

Relax into Healing

We all know we should relax more.

And we all know how difficult it can be to relax.

But here's something we don't all know:

It has been proven that relaxing can fundamentally change your health.

According to Mario Beauregard, author of "Brain Wars", the Harvard Medical School conducted a study which showed that more than 2200 genes were activated differently between people who practiced relaxation and people who didn't.  Perhaps even more interesting, they discovered a gene that is turned on or off by stress is turned the other way during relaxation.   Wow!

Relax with Reiki

Understanding that relaxation can change the way your body operates at this most fundamental level helps to explain the benefits of reiki.  During a reiki treatment you achieve a state of deep relaxation, which is usually accompanied by increased energy and feelings of well-being.  Well, no wonder!  You're giving those stressed-out genes a chance to express themselves in a more balanced way.

There are many ways to relax and trigger the body's innate ability to heal.  If you're not sure which approach is best for you,  why not try reiki?

Weaving the Web

Humankind has not woven the web of life
We are but one thread within it
Whatever we do to the web we do to ourselves
All things are bound together
All things connect

This beautiful quote is usually attributed to Chief Seattle, pictured above in the only known photo of him, taken in 1864.  However the folks over at  snopes tell us it was really written by Ted Perry, a screen writer, in 1971.  Regardless of the author or era, these profound words remain true today, and always will.

"Whatever we do to the web we do to ourselves"

I believe the opposite is also true:

Whatever we do to ourselves we do to the web

So be compassionate with yourself.  Make compassion your connecting thread to the web.  Weave it over, around and through everything you do for yourself.

Take time for yourself.  Do the things that feed your soul.   Yes, you can.  In fact, you have to.  It's like the flight attendant says before take off - you have to put your own oxygen mask on first, before you can help anyone else.

One Small Thing

YOU can make the world a better place.

How?  One small thing:  Learn Reiki

It's inexpensive.

It's easy to learn.

It's easy to do.

It really works.

There are different approaches to Reiki.   The traditional approach focuses on the spiritual (not to be mistaken for religious - Reiki is NOT a religion).  Here's a great resource for this style of Reiki:  http://www.reiki.org/faq/learningreiki.html

A less traditional approach is offered here:  http://reikiawakening.com/practicalreiki    No symbols, no rituals - practical and straight forward.  If this style is for you, I highly recommend her book "Practical Reiki".

Reiki is not a new age fad.  It's a rediscovering of ancient knowledge.  Over 2000 years ago Hippocrates said "The natural healing force within each one of us is the greatest force in getting well."   YOU can use Reiki to tap into this natural healing force and help yourself, family, friends, colleagues and even your pets feel better.

"Never give up helping others.
We can do no great things;
only small things with great love.
Do not wait for leaders;
do it alone, person to person."

Good Intentions

I've been busy lately, reading my way through a very interesting pile of books:

The Energy Healing Experiments by Gary Schwartz
Dr. Schwartz's website

The Intention Experiment by Lynne McTaggart
The Intention Experiment website

Entangled Minds by Dean Radin
Website, Dean Radin PHD

The ESP Enigma by Diane Hennacy Powell
Dr. Hennacy Powell's website

These books explain the scientific research and the myriad experiments being done around the globe by some intrepid scientists.  Experiments that show how our focused intention can physically alter matter.   These scientists use the latest medical technology and some very sophisticated equipment (like a tool that can measure light so subtle it can pick up the flicker of a single burning candle a mile away) to conduct their research.   Though their subject of investigation - energy - is very difficult to quantify, many of the experiments meet the gold standard of scientific research: the double-blind study with replication of results.   These results lead to some very interesting questions.  The answers to which challenge our current understanding of physics.    If you're ready to meet that challenge, I encourage you to read these books and visit the authors' websites.   They don't pretend to have all the answers, but they sure are asking interesting questions.

When one tugs at a single thing in Nature, he finds it hitched to the rest of the Universe.

Qi Gong Day in Toronto

I recently attended the World Qi Gong Congress held in Toronto Ontario.  I attended only one day of the four day event.  That one day was so jam-packed with information, demonstrations and lectures I can't imagine my brain absorbing three more days worth!

"The Magic of Qi Gong" with Lee Holden

I was lucky enough to participate in demonstrations in two of the workshops I attended.   The first workshop was "Energetics of Push Hands" with Lama Tantrapa.     Though it was aimed at beginners (which I am not) I was very impressed by his down-to-earth style, depth of knowledge, and skill.  He had been teaching us how to be rooted so when pushed we wouldn't lose our balance.  When he asked me to participate in a demo by pushing him, I applied all my Tai Chi principles and complied.  And pushed him off balance!  He'd under estimated my abilities, so he re-took his stance and told me to push him again.  I pushed him off balance again, though less so this time.  At this point he turned to the crowded room and announced "She is very powerful".  Yes - Lama Tantrapa said I was powerful!  I was thrilled.  And totally impressed by his lack of ego.  He took his stance again and told me to push.  It was like pushing on jello.  I couldn't find his centre and just rolled off one side or the other, no matter how many times I tried.  It was obvious I was no match for him once he stepped up his game.  But he'd had to step up his game -  proof my years of studying Tai Chi haven't been wasted!

The second workshop was with Dr. Effie Chow.  This tiny lady (I don't think she's five feet tall) is at least sixty-five years old and was sporting a cane.  She asked four large people to come to the front.   I was sitting in the second row - she pointed to me and told me to come up.  I'm overweight, and being selected for my size was hard on my ego, but I went up there anyway.  Once at the front we were told to announce our weight into the microphone so everyone could hear.   Gulp.  Well, I figured everyone could see I was overweight, so what was the big deal about putting a number on it?  So I proudly stated my true weight.  (I guess the glow from the "She is very powerful" comment hadn't worn off yet. )  Someone in the audience added it all up - together the four of us weighed over 800 lbs.   Dr. Chow told us to stand in a line, congo-style and plant ourselves firmly, but not to push back if we felt pushed.  She leaned on the first guy in line, but  couldn't budge him.  Then she used her chi to push instead of her muscles.  She pushed all four of us backward!  I was the furthest away from her yet still felt a smooth, solid and relentless energy push me back.  It was amazing.

Dr. George Love's workshop on Qi Gong to prevent/heal cancer was awesome.  Dr. Love is charismatic and inspiring and emanates a passionate and fun-loving energy.  I was so impressed with him I bought his DVD and plan to learn his Meridian Qi Gong exercises.  The DVD came with a bonus disk of his Qi Gong music video which is also on Youtube.  Watch it here and see his incredible energy for yourself.

Earth Healing - No Dragon Required

Healing with "Earthing"

Earthing is an easy way to help your body overcome illness and injury and improve your overall health.  Sound too good to be true?  "Earthing" is not a new diet or exercise program, in fact it's old.  Very, very old.  What is new is our ability to scientifically support the benefits of "earthing".

What is "earthing"?   It's walking barefoot on the earth.  Yup, that's it.  That's the whole enchilada - exercising on the earth in your bare feet.  Here's a four minute video that gives you a quick overview of the oldest, easiest and free way to improve your health.

There's an excellent video here that explains in detail the research done to support the claim that earthing can help us avoid our body's inflammatory response and why this leads to better health.  The video is just over an hour long but well worth the time investment.  If you don't have an hour to spare you can read the highlights on the page below the video.

I realize all that glitters is not gold, but this seemed to make sense to me so I gave it a try.  I had injured my back 6 days prior and was frustrated by my lack of recovery.  Despite continuing to practice Tai Chi and Qi Gong through the injury, laying down was my only pain free activity.   So I moved my Qi Gong practice outside, removed my socks and did a round of "Eight Brocades" - eight short exercises rooted in Traditional Chinese Medicine.  It took about twenty minutes.

For the next two hours I had tingling in the bottom of my feet as well as tingling and warmth up my legs, half way to my knees.  I have been practicing Qi Gong for years and had never experienced this.  I had never done Qi Gong barefoot in the grass before either.

My back felt better, but I wanted it to be right, not just better.  So I did it again the next day, only this time after completing the exercises I laid on my back on the ground.  After about 10 minutes I was interrupted, my attention called indoors.  Because I was focused on other things, I didn't realize until later that day my back was normal.   Full range of motion - pain free!

If you decide to give earthing a try, please share your experiences here.  I'd love to hear if others have similiar experiences.

Reiki for Health & Wellness

R is for Reiki

Here are 4 really good reasons to give Reiki a try:
  1. Reiki can never do harm.  The Reiki practitioner acts as a channel for the energy and your body does the rest.  You and your body are in control of your own healing.
  2. Reiki is not a religion.  Although Reiki is spiritually guided, Reiki has no religious affiliation.  You do not have to "believe" in anything for Reiki to work.
  3. Reiki does not interfere with your current medications or treatments.  Reiki is a complementary healing technique that  is used in hospitals and hospices.
  4. Reiki works on both chronic illness (e.g. stress related complaints) and acute conditions (e.g. sports injuries).
The benefits of Reiki:
  • pain relief
  • reduced stress
  • improved sleep
  • increased energy
  • feelings of well-being

People who have regular Reiki treatments feel more balanced and report an increased enjoyment in life.  So what are you waiting for?  Why not try Reiki today?  All you've got to lose is your stress.

Labyrinths - A Path to Healing

L is for Labyrinth

A labyrinth is an ancient symbol that relates to wholeness and healing.  It combines the imagery of the circle and the spiral into a meandering but purposeful path.   Labyrinths represent a journey to our own centre and back again out into the world.  They have long been used as meditation and prayer tools.

A labyrinth is not a maze.  Mazes are puzzles with twists, turns and dead ends where many decisions are required to find your way to the centre.  Navigating a maze is a left-brain task that requires logic and sequential thinking.  A labyrinth on the other hand is a right-brain activity that invokes intuition, creativity and imagery.  It's a more passive, receptive experience where there's only one decision to make - to enter or not.  There's only one path in a labyrinth - the way in is the way out.  Once you decide to walk a labyrinth you're on the path to renewing the mind-body-spirit connection.

Research conducted by Harvard Medical School's Mind/Body Institute has found that focused walking meditation such as walking a labyrinth is highly effective at reducing anxiety.  Done on a regular basis walking a labyrinth can result in long-term health benefits including reduction of insomnia, reduction of chronic pain, lowering blood pressure and improved concentration.

If you're interested in walking a labyrinth in Canada or the U.S. click here to access the labyrinth locator.

Accessories

A is for Accessories

Accessory: a thing of secondary or subordinate importance : an object or device not essential in itself but adding to the beauty, convenience, or effectiveness of something else

In the energy healing field there are many accessories a practitioner can use to enhance the client's experience.  Most practitioners provide relaxing music and low level lighting as these are obvious ways to help the client relax.  Incense is another popular accessory which when chosen wisely can fill the room with a calming scent.  Some practitioners decorate their healing room with stones, crystals, statuary and tapestries.  Candles are often present. Others create a sacred space by setting up an alter to display a collection of personal mementos.

There is nothing wrong with using an accessory or two, though some practitioners can get a little carried away.    And too much of a good thing is... well...

just too much.

Energy healing is natural.  It uses the body's subtle energy field and the universal energy that's all around us.  Accessories, while they may enhance the perception of the healing experience, do not necessarily enhance the actual healing outcome.   Energy healing is portable and effective whenever and wherever it is used.   On the side of the road at the scene of an accident.     In a doctor's waiting room.   At a restaurant, or in a movie theatre.  All of these are perfectly acceptable places to receive energy healing.   No special accessories are required.

Whistle while you work...

I have a good job.  As a long term employee for a large stable employer,  I enjoy good wages, good benefits and good working conditions.  I like my colleagues both personally and professionally.  While there are some tasks I enjoy less than others, generally, I like what I do.  As good as all this sounds (and is), it's still work.

It's my part time role as a registered Reiki practitioner that makes my workday worthwhile.   The opportunity to help people heal is a privilege.  Nothing is more rewarding than being allowed to assist a client in his/her unique healing journey.   I am humbled to be invited along to lend aid and observe their experiences.

To all of my Reiki clients - both past and future - thank you!

Curiouser and Curiouser

We've long known the human body can heal itself.

“Everyone has a doctor in him or her; we just have to help it in its work. The natural healing force within each one of us is the greatest force in getting well.” – Hippocrates

Being the curious species we are, we didn't leave things there.  We poked and prodded for thousands of years and came up with some really cool stuff - we call it modern medicine.  And it is amazing!  We will continue to poke around and learn more neat stuff, because that's who we are and what we do.  And it will be amazing!

As we delve deeper and deeper into the tiny organisms that collectively make a human body, as doctors become more specialized in their knowledge because there's just so darn much stuff to know, what happens to the whole?  The whole person? The whole spirit?  Anyone who's had a serious run-in with our medical system knows what happens.... it gets ignored.   You lose your identity.  Your illness or injury represents you.

"When you lose touch with inner stillness, you lose touch with yourself.  When you lose touch with yourself, you lose yourself in the world. " Eckhart Tolle

There are many ways to regain your inner stillness, to regain your "wholeness" when the medical community is treating you like a collection of broken parts.    Reiki is one of the best ways I know.   Reiki taps into the natural healing forces inherent in each physical body.  It helps you tap into that inner stillness.  This healing force knows what to do, and like Hippocrates said - we just have to help it in its work.
