The Top 3 Things to know about Energy Healing

1.  You don't have to be spiritual.

2.  There's thousands of years of research.

3.  Everyone can do it.

There is absolutely no need to be spiritual, or to believe in anything specific, to benefit from energy healing.  The very nature of health is a self-correcting mechanism to restore balance, known as homeostasis.  Energy healing taps into this mechanism and enhances your body's ability to heal itself.

References to energy healing are found throughout recorded history.  Many cultures have complex, well defined healing systems.  Here are just 2 examples - there are many, many more.

Traditional Chinese Medicine has been successfully used for over 2,000 years.  It's based on the idea of balance (yin/yang) and that our life force energy (chi) is circulated throughout the body by meridians - pathways than run from head to toe.

Ancient Indian texts refer to chakras - energy centres along the spine that are linked to glands and organs.  These chakras balance and distribute life force energy (prana).

Each and every one of us can do energy healing.

I believe it's the fundamental nature of being human.

Just like everything else humans can do, some do it better than others.  But with the right training, intention and practice everyone can help others heal.   Even if you're not inclined to learn the skills yourself, a good practitioner will show you simple techniques you can do at home to maintain your own energy balance.

DIY Emotional Freedom - It's Free!

Want to erase your negative thoughts and emotions? Want to rid yourself of pain or discomfort? Want to do it all from the comfort of your home?  All for free?

YOU CAN!

It's called Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT).   It's simple, fast and easy and you can literally erase decades worth of negative emotion and pain.

Gary Craig has gifted EFT to the world - FREE - no strings attached.

While Gary has recently evolved EFT into what he calls "Optimal EFT", the original "Gold Standard" EFT continues to help people all over the world.  You can learn everything you need to know to start tapping your way to emotional freedom here on his website.  For free.

EFT involves tapping on specific points on your body.  These points fall on meridians - the same lines of energy used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (e.g. acupuncture) and Touch for Health.   Tapping these points releases the energy disruptions caused by negative thoughts and memories.  Releasing the energy disruptions releases the thoughts and memories.  It's that simple.  It's that easy.  It's free.

It may seem odd that I'm promoting a website teaching people how to heal themselves for free.  After all, I offer healing sessions that are not free.

My goal is to help as many people as possible to feel their best.

I understand some people can't afford to pay for healing sessions.
I understand some people don't want to pay for healing sessions.

This shouldn't stop them from healing.
Everyone deserves the chance to heal.

So why not try EFT?

Did I mention, it's FREE!

Earth Dragon Healing - now offering Touch for Health energy balances

I am happy to announce that in addition to Reiki and Sound healing, I am now offering Touch for Health energy balances.

What is Touch For Health?  As Matthew Thie, President, explains “Touch for Health is a system of balancing posture, attitude and life energy to relieve stress, aches and pains, feel and function better, be more effective, clarify and achieve your goals and enjoy your life!”  Click here to read more about Touch for Health

Using the principles of Chinese medicine, Touch for Health is based on muscle testing, massage, energy work and postural alignment.  It includes techniques to reduce stress and pain, and to release negative emotions that may be holding you back from achieving your goals.

Stress & Pain

Every thought and emotion affects our body.  We all know the physical symptoms that intense emotions can create - muscle tension, increased heart rate, increased blood pressure, etc.   It’s important to realize that even less intense, fleeting thoughts and emotions can be held in the body.    Everyday little life-things you may have forgotten, that your body remembers and accumulates.   If not released and rebalanced, these can continue to accumulate until your body responds with discomfort, and eventually pain and/or illness.

The body works on a priority basis.  On it’s own priorities.  Think of it like layers of an onion.  This could mean, for example, that your goal is to relieve your low back pain, yet after a couple of balances your back still hurts.  But your sinuses are clearer, your mood is improved and you’re sleeping better.  Those were your body’s priorities.  Be patient - as you remove the layers your priority will be revealed and released.

Achieving your Goals

Touch for Health has a comprehensive protocol for identifying and achieving wellness oriented goals.  Working with the related meridian metaphors can get your own intuitive perceptions flowing, allowing you to creatively problem solve, move forward and reach your goals.  The body’s priority basis also applies to the goal setting process.  The related muscle testing is important to help keep you focused on your body’s priorities and improve your results.

Is Reiki a psychic abilitiy?

Is my Reiki practitioner psychic?

This is a good question and should be discussed at (or before) the first treatment.  Understandably, people can be confused about the differences between a Reiki treatment and a psychic reading.  The fact that some people who do Reiki are psychic makes the confusion all the more...well...confusing.

The short answer is "No".  Reiki is not a psychic ability.  There are so many websites dedicated to describing psychic abilities I won't spend much time explaining it here.  Basically there are 4 major types of psychic ability:  clairvoyance (clear seeing), clairsentience (clear feeling), clairaudience (clear hearing) and claircognizance (clear knowing).  While there are others, these are the main ways psychics receive their information.

By contrast, Reiki doesn't involve any of these "clairs".  Being attuned to Reiki connects the practitioner to healing energy which they then channel to the client during a treatment.  It's this healing energy that does all the good work.

If you have a Reiki treatment from a person who is psychic, they will pick up information during your treatment.   You should decide ahead of time whether you want them to share this information with you.

While Reiki is not a psychic ability, working with Reiki in a client's energy field with an open and honest intention to heal can sometimes (but not always) lead to spontaneous seeing/feeling/hearing/knowing things that are related to that particular healing session.   This doesn't mean the practitioner is suddenly psychic, it's just the interesting way that energy works.

Reiki is a fantastic way to relax, relieve stress and feel better.  Why not give it a try?

Reiki can help!

Most wellness models in our western culture teach that the body is the foundation for everything in life, that without a healthy body everything else suffers.  I believe this is backwards thinking.  Your body isn't the foundation of your health.  Your body is the physical manifestation of your life experiences.  When your life is out of balance your mind gets stressed.  And when your mind is stressed your body suffers.  The good news is that you can make changes in your life, at any time, that can positively affect your health.

Unfortunately our medical system doesn't teach doctors, or allow them the time needed, to counsel their patients on the things that ultimately manifest in the physical body. So we need to take this responsibility on for ourselves.  How do we do that?

Ask yourself what you think might be the root to your medical condition.  Think beyond the conventional answers like "I need to lose weight" or "I am depressed".  These may be true, but they're the symptoms.  You're looking for the underlying cause.  Dig deeper:  Is your marriage on the rocks?  Do you hate your job?  Are you lonely?

Ask yourself "What does my body need so it can heal?"  Yes, maybe you need antibiotics or some professional counselling.  But maybe you need to finish that novel, hire a nanny, forgive an old injustice, or end a relationship.

This is tough stuff.

Go easy on yourself.

Reiki can help.

Pathways to Health

Physical, Emotional, Mental and Spiritual Healing

According to The World Health Organization, "Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being, not merely the absence of disease."  In keeping with this idea of health, working to create a sense of well-being on the physical, emotional, mental and spiritual levels is what Reiki is all about.

Many people use the terms "healing" and "curing" interchangeably but it's important to understand they do not mean the same thing.  Curing means to completely eradicate an illness or disease in the physical body while healing can occur on many different levels and isn't  even necessarily linked to a physical condition.

What does it mean to heal on these different levels?
  1. Physical - healing on this level might mean eliminating an illness completely, or could simply mean alleviating the symptoms for a while , allowing time to address any underlying root causes that might be found on the emotional, mental or spiritual levels.
  2. Emotional - emotional healing might result in calming fears or coming to acceptance of the effects of life-events such as illness, bereavement, job loss, etc.
  3. Mental - the deep state of relaxation assists with the mental release of negative thought patterns or attitudes that might be interfering with relationships or achieving life goals.
  4. Spiritual - healing from a spiritual level could result in a more compassionate attitude towards self, others and the natural world.  Or it might assist in releasing restrictive belief systems to support greater self-expression and creativity.

Relax into Healing

We all know we should relax more.

And we all know how difficult it can be to relax.

But here's something we don't all know:

It has been proven that relaxing can fundamentally change your health.

According to Mario Beauregard, author of "Brain Wars", the Harvard Medical School conducted a study which showed that more than 2200 genes were activated differently between people who practiced relaxation and people who didn't.  Perhaps even more interesting, they discovered a gene that is turned on or off by stress is turned the other way during relaxation.   Wow!

Relax with Reiki

Understanding that relaxation can change the way your body operates at this most fundamental level helps to explain the benefits of reiki.  During a reiki treatment you achieve a state of deep relaxation, which is usually accompanied by increased energy and feelings of well-being.  Well, no wonder!  You're giving those stressed-out genes a chance to express themselves in a more balanced way.

There are many ways to relax and trigger the body's innate ability to heal.  If you're not sure which approach is best for you,  why not try reiki?

Weaving the Web

Humankind has not woven the web of life
We are but one thread within it
Whatever we do to the web we do to ourselves
All things are bound together
All things connect

This beautiful quote is usually attributed to Chief Seattle, pictured above in the only known photo of him, taken in 1864.  However the folks over at  snopes tell us it was really written by Ted Perry, a screen writer, in 1971.  Regardless of the author or era, these profound words remain true today, and always will.

"Whatever we do to the web we do to ourselves"

I believe the opposite is also true:

Whatever we do to ourselves we do to the web

So be compassionate with yourself.  Make compassion your connecting thread to the web.  Weave it over, around and through everything you do for yourself.

Take time for yourself.  Do the things that feed your soul.   Yes, you can.  In fact, you have to.  It's like the flight attendant says before take off - you have to put your own oxygen mask on first, before you can help anyone else.

Good Intentions

I've been busy lately, reading my way through a very interesting pile of books:

The Energy Healing Experiments by Gary Schwartz
Dr. Schwartz's website

The Intention Experiment by Lynne McTaggart
The Intention Experiment website

Entangled Minds by Dean Radin
Website, Dean Radin PHD

The ESP Enigma by Diane Hennacy Powell
Dr. Hennacy Powell's website

These books explain the scientific research and the myriad experiments being done around the globe by some intrepid scientists.  Experiments that show how our focused intention can physically alter matter.   These scientists use the latest medical technology and some very sophisticated equipment (like a tool that can measure light so subtle it can pick up the flicker of a single burning candle a mile away) to conduct their research.   Though their subject of investigation - energy - is very difficult to quantify, many of the experiments meet the gold standard of scientific research: the double-blind study with replication of results.   These results lead to some very interesting questions.  The answers to which challenge our current understanding of physics.    If you're ready to meet that challenge, I encourage you to read these books and visit the authors' websites.   They don't pretend to have all the answers, but they sure are asking interesting questions.

Qi Gong Day in Toronto

I recently attended the World Qi Gong Congress held in Toronto Ontario.  I attended only one day of the four day event.  That one day was so jam-packed with information, demonstrations and lectures I can't imagine my brain absorbing three more days worth!

"The Magic of Qi Gong" with Lee Holden

I was lucky enough to participate in demonstrations in two of the workshops I attended.   The first workshop was "Energetics of Push Hands" with Lama Tantrapa.     Though it was aimed at beginners (which I am not) I was very impressed by his down-to-earth style, depth of knowledge, and skill.  He had been teaching us how to be rooted so when pushed we wouldn't lose our balance.  When he asked me to participate in a demo by pushing him, I applied all my Tai Chi principles and complied.  And pushed him off balance!  He'd under estimated my abilities, so he re-took his stance and told me to push him again.  I pushed him off balance again, though less so this time.  At this point he turned to the crowded room and announced "She is very powerful".  Yes - Lama Tantrapa said I was powerful!  I was thrilled.  And totally impressed by his lack of ego.  He took his stance again and told me to push.  It was like pushing on jello.  I couldn't find his centre and just rolled off one side or the other, no matter how many times I tried.  It was obvious I was no match for him once he stepped up his game.  But he'd had to step up his game -  proof my years of studying Tai Chi haven't been wasted!

The second workshop was with Dr. Effie Chow.  This tiny lady (I don't think she's five feet tall) is at least sixty-five years old and was sporting a cane.  She asked four large people to come to the front.   I was sitting in the second row - she pointed to me and told me to come up.  I'm overweight, and being selected for my size was hard on my ego, but I went up there anyway.  Once at the front we were told to announce our weight into the microphone so everyone could hear.   Gulp.  Well, I figured everyone could see I was overweight, so what was the big deal about putting a number on it?  So I proudly stated my true weight.  (I guess the glow from the "She is very powerful" comment hadn't worn off yet. )  Someone in the audience added it all up - together the four of us weighed over 800 lbs.   Dr. Chow told us to stand in a line, congo-style and plant ourselves firmly, but not to push back if we felt pushed.  She leaned on the first guy in line, but  couldn't budge him.  Then she used her chi to push instead of her muscles.  She pushed all four of us backward!  I was the furthest away from her yet still felt a smooth, solid and relentless energy push me back.  It was amazing.

Dr. George Love's workshop on Qi Gong to prevent/heal cancer was awesome.  Dr. Love is charismatic and inspiring and emanates a passionate and fun-loving energy.  I was so impressed with him I bought his DVD and plan to learn his Meridian Qi Gong exercises.  The DVD came with a bonus disk of his Qi Gong music video which is also on Youtube.  Watch it here and see his incredible energy for yourself.

Good Vibrations

V is for Vibration

The whole universe is vibrating.

Energy is neither created nor destroyed, it is only transformed and transferred.

Energy and matter are different states of the same phenomenon.

The energy that manifests itself as matter is constantly vibrating.

The most common and obvious way we experience these vibrations is through sound.   Here are some links for you to listen to the vibrations of the universe:

If you think what you say or how you say it doesn't matter, watch here to see the human voice create vibrational patterns

Reiki for Health & Wellness

R is for Reiki

Here are 4 really good reasons to give Reiki a try:
  1. Reiki can never do harm.  The Reiki practitioner acts as a channel for the energy and your body does the rest.  You and your body are in control of your own healing.
  2. Reiki is not a religion.  Although Reiki is spiritually guided, Reiki has no religious affiliation.  You do not have to "believe" in anything for Reiki to work.
  3. Reiki does not interfere with your current medications or treatments.  Reiki is a complementary healing technique that  is used in hospitals and hospices.
  4. Reiki works on both chronic illness (e.g. stress related complaints) and acute conditions (e.g. sports injuries).
The benefits of Reiki:
  • pain relief
  • reduced stress
  • improved sleep
  • increased energy
  • feelings of well-being

People who have regular Reiki treatments feel more balanced and report an increased enjoyment in life.  So what are you waiting for?  Why not try Reiki today?  All you've got to lose is your stress.

Earth Energies

"E" is for Earth Energy

I believe we need to spend more time connected to the energies of the earth.  In this post I share some of my experiences with you in hopes that you'll seek out your own interactions with the natural world around you.

Earth

When I was a kid I used to lay on the ground in my yard.  I'd roll down the small hill in front of the house and then just stay wherever my last roll left me.   I'd look up at the sky from there and watch the white clouds float across the blue background.  Then I'd close my eyes and wait until I could feel  the energy of the earth.   It was subtle at first, but got stronger the longer I lazed there.  I imagined it was the earth's speed that I felt as we spun on our axis and hurled around the sun.

I hadn't done this in almost 40 years when last summer at a friend's cottage three of us decided to give it a try.  We spread some blankets at the edge of a small lake and laid down to relax.  The air was chilly but the sun was hot and bright so I covered my eyes with my palms.   At first all I felt was the heat from the sun burning my legs through my dark jeans.  But as I settled in I began to feel it - we all did.  Gentle at first, then more intense as we continued to focus on the physical sensations it caused.  It was reassuring to know that after all those years the energy of the earth was still there, unchanged.   Just as unchanged as the earth rotating on an axis and orbiting the sun.

 Water

The energy of water feels unique to each situation.   The energy of deep, still water feels very different from the energy of water rushing over a waterfall.  During 2011's A-Z challenge my "W" post was "Water Energy".  I've linked to it here:   http://earthdragonhealing.blogspot.com/2011/04/water-energy.html

Trees

I have a friend who talks to trees.   She offers them reiki and in return they share their wisdom.  I would have thought she was crazy, except for 2 things:  1) I've known her for the last 8 years to be a rational and intelligent adult; and 2) On one occasion we reiki'd the same tree at the same time and then shared our experiences.  They were almost identical, though her's a little more profound as her intuition is more developed than mine.   Since that mind-opening experiment I feel the energy of the trees.  I feel it in the city from the trees whose roots are buried under the cement.    I feel it in the woods whenever I go for a walk, especially in the fall when the trees have shed their leaves and they're piled on the ground around me.   Tree energy is very intense in the fall.  Now I think I understand why it's my favourite time of year.

How do you get in touch with nature?  Do you camp out? Ski? Canoe?  Please share what you do to connect to the earth energies.

Breathe Easy

B is for

There is nothing more natural than breathing.  It's the first thing we do when we're born.  It's the last thing we stop doing when we die.  Somewhere between the two we change the way we do it.  Watch a baby and you'll see the belly expand on the inhale.  Ask  an adult to take a deep breath and you'll see the chest expand and shoulders raise instead.  I'm not sure why this happens.  What I am sure of though, is that oxygen is essential to life and health and our habit of shallow breathing robs us of this vital energy source.

I offer you two really simple breathing exercises.  One to help you relax when you're feeling stressed.  The other to energize you when you're dragging.  For both exercises focus on where the breath goes.  Visualize the air going to the bottom of the lungs first to expand the belly,  then filling the top of the lungs last.  Do this in a relaxed way - don't force the breath in any way - just allow it to flow.

RELAX:
Inhale and exhale slowly through the nose.  Count to be sure each inhale and each exhale are the same length.  Start with a count of 4, then as your breathing slows down and your body starts to relax, increase the count to 6, and then 8.  Do this for 3 - 5 mins. whenever you're feeling stressed.   You can also use this technique as a sleep aid - continuing breathing like this until you slumber off.

ENERGIZE:
Inhale slowly through the nose, exhale quickly through the mouth.  Count to be sure each inhale is twice as long as each exhale.   (Try a 6 and 3 count to start and adjust to what feels comfortable.)  Be sure that you fully exhale each time, your lungs should be empty before you start the next inhale.  Do this for 3 - 5 mins. whenever you need an energy boost.

Accessories

A is for Accessories

Accessory: a thing of secondary or subordinate importance : an object or device not essential in itself but adding to the beauty, convenience, or effectiveness of something else

In the energy healing field there are many accessories a practitioner can use to enhance the client's experience.  Most practitioners provide relaxing music and low level lighting as these are obvious ways to help the client relax.  Incense is another popular accessory which when chosen wisely can fill the room with a calming scent.  Some practitioners decorate their healing room with stones, crystals, statuary and tapestries.  Candles are often present. Others create a sacred space by setting up an alter to display a collection of personal mementos.

There is nothing wrong with using an accessory or two, though some practitioners can get a little carried away.    And too much of a good thing is... well...

just too much.

Energy healing is natural.  It uses the body's subtle energy field and the universal energy that's all around us.  Accessories, while they may enhance the perception of the healing experience, do not necessarily enhance the actual healing outcome.   Energy healing is portable and effective whenever and wherever it is used.   On the side of the road at the scene of an accident.     In a doctor's waiting room.   At a restaurant, or in a movie theatre.  All of these are perfectly acceptable places to receive energy healing.   No special accessories are required.

To Tell the Truth

Scientist and shaman use a different language to tell the same story.  Both are truth spoken from a different perspective.

Current popular ideas in theoretical physics are attempting to explain the energy in the universe.  String theory tells us that unimaginably tiny vibrating strings of energy (in nine different dimensions!) are the building blocks for every particle of matter.  Another theory tells us we live not in a uni-verse but a multi-verse, an unimaginably giant place that has an infinite and ever growing number of universes contained within it.  The scientists tell us the mathematics behind these two theories support each other.  Trouble is, they don't currently have a way to test and prove these theories.  Until they do, their ideas can't be considered hard science.  But that doesn't stop those scientists from continuing their research.  They toil away, hoping that in a hundred years or so we'll have a method to prove their theories right.

We need the same kind of determined patience in the field of the healing energy arts.  While a limited amount of science has been applied to measure healing outcomes (e.g. reduced blood pressure) we have no objective way of proving the theory behind the healing.   To tell the truth, I really don't know why Reiki and Shamballa work.  What I have received as explanation are the centuries-old stories passed from master to student.  But from experience I do know it works, and I will keep using it to heal people while I wait for the scientists to figure things out.  In the meantime, I have the language of the Shaman.

Trust your body, trust yourself

Energy healing vs faith healing: What's the difference?

First, what do we mean by healing?  Healing isn't always about being cured. Healing refers to a revitalizing and regenerative process that can occur on the emotional, spiritual, or physical level.

According to the merriam-webster online dictionary faith is defined as "A firm belief in something for which there is no proof."

There is plenty of proof that energy healing modalities affect the body. Some of the proof is considered scientific evidence as it has been gathered and analyzed using the traditional western scientific method.  Some of the proof is anecdotal, gathered by non-scientists and scientists alike, and reported in their business magazines and published books.

The same dictionary source defines trust as "Assured reliance on the character, ability, strength, or truth of someone or something."   What is more assured than our bodies ability to heal themselves?  We routinely knit together broken bones,  regenerate new skin and rewire our neural pathways.

Energy healing is about trusting your body to do what it was designed to do.  No faith required.

Who's in Control Anyway?

Source
A weekly post, on a topic selected by Word Nerd Speaks .

Control

Our bodies know how to heal themselves.   A broken bone knits itself together, skin regenerates itself underneath a protective scab, neural pathways in the brain can rewire themselves.   Pretty standard stuff you say?  Yes, we've become quite nonchalant.  But if you take a moment to think about it, our body's ability to heal itself is actually quite amazing.

Who's in control of this healing?  The doctor?  Doctors prescribe the most effective medication available, dispense the most current advice, then wait to see how a body responds.  Some bodies respond with healing, some don't.  No, I don't think the doctor is in control.

What about energy healers?  Are they in control of the physical healing by manipulating your energy?  Again, the answer is "no".  If you come across an energy healer who tells you otherwise run away....fast.

A good energy healer recognizes she doesn't control anything.  Using her intention, she allows your body's natural healing to take place.  That's all there is to it.  Modalities, like sound healing and Reiki for example, are tools healers use to assist with focusing their intent.   Using these tools without intention is like trying to drive a car without wheels - you're not going to get anywhere.

I recently attended a talk given by Simon Hay, Soul Healer , an Australian on business in the U.S.  Thanks to host Evita Ochel of Evolving Beings Simon crossed the border into Canada where I heard him speak.  He is an amazing healer/regular guy who teaches that every one of us is a healer.   According to Simon:

"Healing is attention without direction. When I’m healing, spirit reminds me that I’m not in control. My only purpose is to be attentive. My intention is to heal, not heal something, or heal this way. This allows me to see what’s happening and not create the outcome. We’ve forgotten that our bodies can self-heal."  The rest of his article can be read here.

In the world of energy healing, when it comes to control, less always results in more.
