Vacuuming up

"V" is for Vacuum

Has your belief system sucked the air out of your ideas balloon?

Without careful attention, belief systems can become rigid structures, a dogmatic vacuum all thoughts and ideas are filtered through.  A rigid belief system always results in the same thing - a closed mind.  Getting your ideas balloon to expand involves being open to different ideas, especially those that run counter to your own.

It's at this intersection of belief and assumption where new ideas can take shape.  It's a tough corner to hang out on, but it's worth the blood, sweat and tears to have new ideas rise, inflate and float to the surface where they can be used to write a better book, be a better parent or run a better country.

  1. Hi Laurie, wonderful to 'meet' you.

Interesting post. Belief systems can indeed become rigid structures, whether they're about economy, science, religion, relationships, identity, etc.

I think most areas of life benefit from asking questions, rather than giving answers.

Like teaching: I feel it's more a matter of asking the right questions (so students are motivated to look for answers, come up with their own, and/or discover new questions) than of giving 'right' answers - if there is such a thing.

  2. @KC Woolf - you are so right! People need to come up with their own conclusions and not have someone elses belief system jammed down their throat.

@Karen Walker - I like that "what I just inhaled" great way to say it!

  3. Wise words indeed. I was raised Catholic and have spent most of my life trying to sort out rote and actual belief. It's been a struggle and I no longer actively practice Now I have to sort out what I really believe as far as spiritual matters.

  4. @Melissa Bradley - me too. There's lot's of spirituality in religion, and there's lots in religion that's not spirituality. The trick is sorting it all out for yourself....
