The Future is Now

"F" is for Future

“How wonderful that no one need wait a single moment
to improve the world."
Anne Frank (1929-1945)

With so much buzz about 2012 and the Mayan calendar, I can't help but think about our future and what it might look like.   I must admit, some days it's hard to be optimistic.  Political revolutions, austerity measures, oil wars, corporate bail outs, climate change, famine, peak oil, genetically modified food - so many things seem to be reaching their tipping point.   So what can one person do about any of this?  Lots!

“The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for
good men to do nothing.”
Edmund Burke (1729-1797); Statesman, Author, Philosopher

5 things you can do to make a difference

Try to keep things in perspective. Be mindful of the big problems, but focus on solving them through the things we can all do everyday to help reduce them.  Develop a positive outlook:
  1. First, accept that you are only able to control your actions and responses to changing conditions around you.
  2. Take responsibility for your actions in all things. It sounds simple but being accountable to yourself will help you make the necessary changes.
  3. Stop to consider the consequences of your actions (if I choose to do this, what will be the result?).
  4.  Lead by example! If you can change, then it just might inspire others.
  5. Remember that one person can make a difference. Small accomplishments add up quicker then you might think. Remember, no matter what your economic standing, you can help save the environment and money at the same time. You the consumer drive the market; products are made because you buy them. If you buy products that are better for the environment it will become profitable for companies to respond to the demand for environmentally-friendly products. It really is that simple.

If you choose only one product on which to flex your consumer muscle, please make it bottled water.  Watch the movie "Tapped" - it will boggle your mind!  At least spend a bit of time on the movie's website found here.   Thank you!
“I am only one, but still I am one. I cannot do everything,
but still I can do something;
and because I cannot do everything,
I will not refuse to do something that I can do.”
Edward Everett Hale

What one man is doing to prove small, individual actions have earthshaking potential: http://www.rd.com/true-stories/inspiring/paul-stamets-and-the-healing-power-of-mushrooms/

“...if anything matters then everything matters. Because you are important, everything you do is important. Every time you forgive, the universe changes; every time you reach out and touch a heart or a life, the world changes; with every kindness and service, seen or unseen, my purposes are accomplished and nothing will be the same again.”      William P. Young, The Shack

  1. Bottled water is one of the greatest marketing schemes of all time. But what a waste. I'm trying to visit all the A-Z Challenge Blogs this month.

  3. Okay, I will try to watch the movie Tapped. I seldom...if ever....use bottled water. Such a waste. I wish I still lived in the country where we had spring water, but here I am in town, drinking city water. Ah well, at least the elk swim in the city's reservoir.

    1. According to "tapped" cities test their water hundreds of time each month to be sure it's safe. The bottling companies are not required to test. :0

  4. I never buy bottled water. Ordinary tap water tastes much better!

    1. Nice to "hear" from you again too! Doesn't it seem that everything that's easy and convenient turns out to be bad for something/someone.....

  7. I think my history teacher said bottled water caused cavities or something. Is he right? No idea.

    1. I don't remember anything about it ruining peoples' teeth, but it is ruining the environment for sure.

  8. Water is such a huge "issue" and it shouldn't be. Politicos and corporatists are turning water into a commodity, and that is very, very scary thing. I use reverse osmosis filtration to get a drinkable tap product. Water is life.

    1. By purchasing bottled water we are voluntarily commodifying water - a very dangerous and slippery slope.

  10. I love your blog. The things you mentioned in 1-5 are part of the foundation of my life. It's wonderful feeling to me, to see it in someone else. (I suppose my long love of dragons might have a little bit to do with it too ;-)

    1. Thank you. It's awesome when you find others who share your life philosophy. And anyone who likes dragons is awesome to me.

  11. Great post and spot on. I'm reading a book about the 14th century right now (yeah, I'm a real "life of the party" that way). Talk about 100 years of death, destruction, and mayhem. AND-don't answer yet!-we have the Black Death! Somehow, though, we made it. So, I'm hopeful that someday, too, we'll muddle through that which besets us.
    It's my hope, at least.
At least we don't have to worry about the Plague.
    I hope.

  12. Hi, I drink tap water and find it very satisfying. I don't need bottled water...I can't see paying for water twice. I pay my water bill...why should I buy water from a different source. That is like "double dipping" Ha ha play on words.
I have always taken responsibility for my actions, and raised my daughters to be the same way. Good post. I gotta go, and do some more blog-hopping. Best regards to you. Ruby

    1. You're right - we are paying twice, and perhaps many more times if you consider the consequences.

  13. Great advice. After we paid big money to get a new well put in, I drink the tap water and it is good.

  14. Wonderful post! I totally agree that we have the power to change the world. Even a smile can be contagious and who knows where that can lead. I drink tap water and I have containers for the kids lunches also. One of them broke and I lazily went back to bottled waters for their lunches. You've inspired me to replace the water container. Thank you for posting the quotes!

    1. Glad to hear you're kids are going back to tap water and that you enjoyed the quotes. I was going to say Anne Frank's is my favourite quote, but as I read them again I decided I love them all. :)
