X is for Xing Yi Quan
Xing Yi Quan is one of the major "internal" styles of Chinese martial arts.
The style is characterized by aggressive, seemingly
linear movements and explosive power. Xing Yi Quan uses coordinated movements to generate bursts of power
intended to overwhelm the opponent, simultaneously attacking and
defending.
The video below gives a real quick overview of the history and theory of Xing Yi and shows the movements being performed. And there's a woman demonstrating - yay!
Amazing that something which looks like a dance is actually used for fighting, even if it's for self defence. Good to see the woman who is as good as the men :)
ReplyDeleteYay for woman martial artists!
DeleteThat's so cool! Wish I could do that. It's both beautiful and deadly.
ReplyDeleteOver the years of studying Tai Chi I have learned some xing yi. Doesn't look like this when I do it :(
DeleteBut it's still fun!
Really neat video. When they are moving slow, you can so easily pick out the hits are disabling. I think the good thing about martial arts is that there is a mental discipline that goes along with teaching the physical.
ReplyDeleteGreat X post. It was a tough one :-)
Yes, the practice of internal martial arts cannot be separated from the discipline - they're one and the same.
DeleteThis impressive warrior style fighting reminds me of Worfs in Star Trek TNG! I bet they drink prune juice, hehe.
ReplyDeleteno.. bloodwine and gogh all the way!
DeleteThis is so beautiful to watch- interesting how familiar many of the movements are! Paying an A-Z return visit, very pleased to have found your blog :-)
